I have a lot of love for Movies especially science fiction however nothing beats the fun of sitting behind a screen and playing some hard core FPS games. Apart from them i am a major lover of Assassins Creed titles especially Brotherhood, The Witcher and God Of War. Huge fan of animation director Hayo Mayazaki.
As you may all know that Gears 5 is the upcoming installment in the much loved and well anticipated third-person shooter game franchise, Gears of Wars. Now while you are waiting to hear interesting things that might actually make a difference in your lives, take a look at this not so interesting yet allegedly life-altering news regarding Gears 5. Apparently Gears 5 is currently undergoing a smoking free initiative, which might seem promising but we have our fingers crossed over it just being a marketing bluff to avoid hassle and attract attention for no valid reason.
It recently came to light that Gears 5 will be a smoke-free establishment. That is to say, a decision has been made to remove all smoking references from the game. This came when a non-profit anti-smoking organization Truth Initiative approached Turner Broadcasting, whose ELeague division apparently has broadcasting rights to Gears 5. Which means that they have the right to contest the smoking aspect in the game by perhaps initiating a Gears 5 smoking free initiative.
While the game is set to release come September 10, this year, removing this smoking aspect came pretty much as a surprise. That said, Turner Broadcasting is promoting the partnership with Truth Initiative, for this weekend’s ELeague Gears Summer series Invitational. The esports tournament is taking place as we speak from today July 13 till tomorrow July 14. It is being covered live on Twitch. This will be the first time fans see Gears 5 in action.
Which is a pretty promising fact, however, removing smoking over some preconceived notion of morality is a whole new thing. Now with the collaboration between the developers of the game The Coalition and Turner Broadcasting, all smoking references will be removed from this upcoming game. Be that as it may, why do we think that this is a marketing bluff, is perhaps the initial fact that the previous, Gears of War games have had a significant amount of characters who smoked. For example, COG Michael Barrick, who was a chain smoker to a level of addiction. In Gears of War 3 Barrick in fact, pretty much held cigar to this mouth, while you were playing him in competitive multiplayer.
Now while it jogs your memory, we think that removing such aspect will do no one any favor, just like including it did no one any harm. We all know someone or have been influenced by someone or have seen movies, that have smoking working as a feature to create a personality of a character. In fact, creating awareness among youngsters about smoking being harmful has mostly backfired with teenagers. Now while you hold that thought, check out what Rod Fergusson, the studio head at The Coalition, had to say.
I’ve seen firsthand the devastating impact of smoking. It’s always been important for me to not use smoking as a narrative device, which is why we made the conscious choice to avoid highlighting or glorifying smoking in ‘Gears 5’ and throughout the Gears of War Universe moving forward.”
That said according to a representative for Xbox Games Studio, this decision was solely made by The Coalition and we believe it.
What really gets us going is the fact that he is lying. If smoking was an issue for him, then why would he take this Gears 5 Smoking Free Initiative so late in the game, let alone in his career as a developer. He is credited with the following game, most of which have smoking references;
- 2006 – Gears of War
- 2007 – Unreal Tournament 3
- 2008 – Gears of War 2
- 2010 – Lost Planet 2
- 2010 – Infinity Blade
- 2011 – Gears of War 3
- 2011 – Infinity Blade II
- 2011 – Bulletstorm
- 2013 – Gears of War: Judgment
- 2013 – Infinity Blade III
- 2013 – BioShock Infinite
- 2016 – Gears of War 4
However, now suddenly he felt like smoking is injurious to health and it should not be included. That is perhaps a lame story and while it can be appreciated that the devs don’t want to create a fuss over this. What they do not understand is that Gears 5 and all other games are a mode of entertainment. Entertainment is to be taken as entertainment because if that is the case then guns should also be not included since the US and other countries have consistently encountered shootouts in schools and at an alarming rate. Over which a lot of concerns have been raised. In fact to such a level that most of the people are using video games as scapegoats, for causing this in the first place. Considering what Rod Fergusson had to say, pretty much translates that if he had seen violence first hand then he should not be including guns and blood in the game as well.
So there is no logic to this Gears 5 Smoking Free Initiative and not sure what they hoped to achieve but bets are it is just a marketing bluff played to capture the attention.
