In the recent financial results declaration, Sony has revealed that it has shipped nearly 100 million PS4 units. In exact numbers, PS4 Worldwide Shipments have reached a staggering 96.8 million as of March 31st, 2019. This was revealed in the last three months of financial results, ending at the end of March.
What this means is that about 2.6 million PlayStation 4s were shipped during the third quarter, which shows that the consumption of this console is still at an increasing rate. Why do we refer to its current consumption? is because of the fact that Sony has acknowledged, this console to have reached the end of its life cycle. In fact, Sony is currently working on the next-gen PlayStation console.
A great many details have surfaced regarding the next-gen PlayStation, presumably PS5 but no official release date has been revealed so far. Putting that into context, it gets us wondering that even though PS4 might have reached the end of its life cycle. The company still has a great many plans for its sale. Most probably adding backward compatibility might also be in the mix for PS4. That is of course not official but recent rumors regarding Sony filing backward compatibility seem to suggest two possibilities. That either it is being considered for PS5 or for the current gen PlayStation.
Our wild guess is that both are possible, latter one being a more plausible option because Sony has also made a forecast in its financial report that it will sell 16 million PlayStation 4s in the fiscal year 2019, which runs from April 1, 2019, to March 31st, 2020. So perhaps one can expect some good news related to backward compatibility any time soon. Be that as it may, take this notion with a grain of salt for now.
